Episode 16: Will man ever colonize alien planets? Unlikely. But we can make Cascadia a thriving, special place right here on Earth. Cascadia Magazine founder and publisher Andrew Engelson comes by the bookstore and suggests that celebrating the culture of the region may be one of the keys to navigating the massive change occurring here. Ian then speaks with Critical Northwest organizer Daniel Azoulai about Burning Man, what a “regional burn” is, and how his organization is trying to engage the more diverse members of the Seattle community.
Andrew Engelson:
Andrew is an award-winning journalist and writer born in Washington States and currently living in Seattle after several years living abroad. He has written thousands of news and feature articles for online and print publications, including Seattle Weekly, Washington Trails Association, and his personal blog, The Lost Salt Atlas. Andrew is the founder of Cascadia Magazine, a new publication dedicated to covering the people, places, and culture of the Pacific Northwest. Cascadia’s Almost Summer Reading, the magazine’s first public reading event, will feature some of the region’s most talked-about poets, writers, & journalists at Vermillion on Friday, June 1.
Daniel Azoulai:
Daniel, a senior partnerships manager at Uber Eats by day — yes, he’s the one getting you food at 1am — is also one of the newest board members of Ignition Northwest, Seattle’s regional Burning Man association, where he manages arts, grants, and other cultural activities for the various regional “burn” events. Daniel, a native of Atlanta, GA, lives on Capitol Hill with his wife Staci.
