cascadia solstice rainbow pride

One of the goals of the Seattle branch of CascadiaNow for 2013 is to address the problem of invasive species in our region. Seattle is partnering with King County Parks to remove these invasive species from White Center Heights Park, and CascadiaNow will be participating in volunteer-led events to do the work.

CascadiaNow will now partner with King County Parks

One of the goals of the Seattle branch of CascadiaNow for 2013 is to address the problem of invasive species in our region. They are so prevalent in our environment that you probably see them every day without even thinking about it anymore. These species include, but are by no means limited to, Scot’s Broom, Himalayan Blackberry, and English Ivy. CascadiaNow Seattle is partnering with King County Parks to remove these invasive species from White Center Heights Park. This will be the first of a reoccurring event, with future events being held the first Saturday of each month. This is an amazing opportunity to get involved and help return our parks to their natural ecosystem. All tools and gloves are being provided by KCP along with snacks and water.

White Center Heights Park has an interesting back story. Thanks to a generous donation by the Starbucks Coffee Company, White Center Heights Park received an ‘ultimate park makeover’ in 2007. With the help of 1,500 volunteers, this park is now home to a grass berm amphitheater, community garden, walking trail, pea patch, barbeque pit, and picnic shelter and tables. This urban park is surrounded by enhanced Class II wetlands.

If you are interested in participating, the first event is scheduled for March 2nd from 9am – 1pm. You can find the park at SW 102nd & 7th Ave SW, just south of the Seattle city limits. More information can be found on the Cascadia Now – Seattle Facebook page or Google+ community or you can email CascadianEpoch@gmail.com .  This event is open to anyone who’s willing to get out and get a little dirty to make our community a better place. Invite your friends and we’ll see you on March 2nd!
